Case Field will be buzzing for the first time this fall as the Washington Demon football team hosts Muscatine in a preseason scrimmage tonight in action you can hear on KCII.
The Demons will take the gridiron in 2025 coming off of their best season since 2020, going 6-3 overall and 3-2 in district play. Last year, Washington put up 23 points per game and gave up 22, averaging 280 yards per contest, 141 of which through the air. The Demons return senior first-team all-district star Kael Williams, who led Washington with 528 rushing yards and six touchdowns in his junior season. Also back is senior Caden Greiner, who not only ran for nearly 100 yards offensively last season, but recorded over 35 total tackles and two interceptions on defense. Defensively, Blaine Rees is back as a junior at linebacker after a successful sophomore campaign of 16 solo tackles, three sacks and a team-high two fumble recoveries. The Demon defense recorded 20 total takeaways a season ago. Washington ranked top 10 in 3A in nine different statistical categories in 2024.
Muscatine went 3-6 last season and finished 2-2 in district play. In 2024, the Muskies put up 19 points per game and gave up 33, averaging 295 yards per contest, 239 on the ground. Individually, the Muskies return senior quarterback Gaige Curtis, who completed 37% of his passes for all 507 of Muscatine’s passing yards and six scores. Senior running back Seth Reiland is back after rushing for 989 yards last year and two touchdowns. Junior Colin Glynn is the top returning tackler for the Muskies with 20 solo from his 2024 campaign, including a fumble recovery and an interception.
Washington head coach Kelly Williams is no stranger to a football field, but as he tells KCII Sports, the feeling of running out under the Friday night lights with his team behind him never dulls.
“There’s no greater feeling than running out with a group of guys behind me on Friday night,” Williams said. “But running out on Case Field with a group of guys that put in as much time and effort as the coaching staff with all the time they put in, it’s one of the greatest feelings ever.”
Washington senior Kael Williams explained to KCII Sports the leadership mentality he and the other seniors have tried to instill this offseason.
“When I think of Washington Demon football, I think of just hard work and grit, discipline,” Williams said. “Every day you are expected to come in and do your best. We have a lot of vocal leaders on the team and we also have some guys that are not as vocal who lead by example. It’s all about leaving our jersey in a better place.”
In the Varsity Bound era, Washington has not played Muscatine in a regular season contest. However, the Demons met the Muskies in scrimmage action last season.
