At KCII we’re counting down the top 10 biggest stories in Washington High School sports for the 2024-2025 academic year. At number three is boys’ wrestler Aaron Boone finishing third in the state in his weight class.

One of the winningest wrestlers in school history, Boone was looking to build on taking fourth in Class 2A at 132 pounds in 2024 and win a third career state medal. A record-setting senior season would ensue.

On his way to crossing the 150-win mark for his career, Boone would win his first 27 bouts this past winter and had four tournament championships under his belt by the time the postseason rolled around.

At the Class 2A District 12 tournament in Williamsburg on February 15th, Boone’s victory by technical fall in the semifinals would punch his ticket back to state, even as he suffered a loss in the championship bout. A win by pin to open the state tournament would be followed by dropping a 10-6 decision in the quarterfinals, but Boone was undeterred.

He earned three straight victories, including a pin of Steele Diercks from Davenport Assumption that put him in the third-place match, where he outmuscled Kaiden Fox of Oskaloosa via a 4-1 decision in his final high school match.

The win not only earned Boone his best-ever finish at state but was also his 50th win of the season, setting a new single-season school record. Boone was named the Southeast Conference Co-Wrestler of the Year and also received academic all-state honors. He’ll be continuing his wrestling career at Loras College in Dubuque.
