The Columbus Community School District has hired a new activities director, and his focus is on connecting with the community, both virtually and in-person.
Michael Aragon, a University of Iowa graduate from West Liberty, was most recently at Roma Independent School District in southern Texas. Aragon coached freshman boys’ basketball at Roma, leading the team to a 15-1 record and a district championship in 2024-25. In addition to being named Activities Director, he was also hired to be the JV basketball coach at Columbus.
According to Aragon’s first presentation to the Columbus School Board following his hiring, his early priorities are connecting with students, staff and coaches, updating the district’s activities handbook, and modernizing the activities departments’ social media presence. He has also begun homecoming planning and has purchased new volleyball equipment ahead of the 2025 season.Aragon replaces Paul Kissell, who resigned in April.11
