At KCII we’re counting down the top 10 biggest stories in area high school sports for the 2024-2025 academic year. At number five is Sigourney Savages boys’ golf reaching the Class 1A state championships as a team for the first time since 2019 and finishing in fifth place.
Sigourney had a strong 2024 season that included winning the conference tournament and a sectional team championship, but finishing fourth at districts kept the Savages from going to the state meet. They would not be denied this past spring.
Sigourney racked up a whopping eight team victories in the 2025 regular season, including their first three events. While the Savages would be runner-up in the South Iowa Cedar League to HLV/Tri-County by a single stroke, they continued to play great golf as the postseason began.
Another sectional title came on May 14th after a combined score of 286 strokes, led by a new star, as freshman Jordan Tremmel shot a one-under-par 69 at Sigourney Golf Club.
Senior Cain Weber and sophomore Solon Yates were only two strokes behind him in a tie for second, while junior Josh Wyatt and senior Isaac Bruns rounded out the overall top five by shooting 75 and 77, respectively.
At the Class 1A district meet at Crestwood Hills Golf Course in Anita on May 19th, the Savages again rose to the occasion and were co-winners with CAM and Woodbine after posting a combined score of 318. Tremmel finished fifth overall by leading the team with a six-over 77, while Yates cracked the top 10 as well with a 79.
Sigourney would have nearly identical team scores across both days at South Hills Golf Course in Waterloo for the state tournament, shooting a combined 336 as a team on May 27th before recording one stroke more the following day.
Yates ended up with the best individual score for the Savages, carding a seven-over 79 on Day One and finishing 19 over par for the tournament to make it inside the overall top 20. Sophomore Ike Molyneux was only one stroke behind him, while Tremmel and Weber also made the top 50.
