Five years ago, Iowans experienced a catastrophic derecho as a line of storms extended more than 770 miles. According to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, the storm with sustained winds lasted 14 hours across several states and had 25 tornadoes.

Sunday marked the fifth anniversary of the storm. The Governor issued a disaster proclamation for 27 counties across the state in the days following the storm, those counties included Washington, Iowa, and Johnson.

The Iowa DNR recently published an interactive map showing the impact of the storm and recovery efforts since. Items include information on how over 32,000 acres of the urban tree canopy were damaged, the impact to air quality from the tree loss, an estimated 850,000 acres of crops that were lost, and damage to buildings and structures. It also shares how communities are planting trees and have been working on restoration projects over the last few years.
