The sixth biggest sports story from the last school year for the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks takes us to Dwight G. Sattler Field for an in-depth look at the Hawk’s first district football title and quarterfinal appearance since 2008.

After an 0-3 start to the year with losses to Wilton, Iowa City Regina and Sigourney-Keota, the Hawks turned the tables, by running the table in Class 2A District 5, en route to an undefeated title. Mid-Prairie outscored their opponents 204-53 in total, collecting wins over West Burlington Notre Dame, Davis County, Mediapolis, Central Lee and Albia. The Golden Hawk dominance continued in the playoffs as they pounded Union, La Porte City 35-7 in their opener in Wellman and beat MEPO a second time 35-14 in the second round to make the state quarterfinals for the first time in 16 years, rising to No. 9 in the Class 2A rankings before ending their season one step shy of the UNI-Dome at top five Prairie City Monroe.

The Golden Hawk’s district dominance continued in the post-season awards category. A dozen Golden Hawks made All-District teams including first teamers quarterback Brady Weber, defensive back Blake Swart, wide receivers Ace Peck and Cobi Hershberger, offensive linemen Landon Kos and Tommy Miller, utility Conner Wiles, running back Hudson Ehrenfelt, and linebacker Kaden Kos. Honorable mention choices were Quinn Callahan, Tatem Telfer and Kale Miller. The Golden Hawks also swept all three District MVP selections with Ehrenfelt on offense, Kaden Kos on defense and Miller on the line. Ehrenfelt, Kos and Miller were also named All-State. Head coach Daren Lambert was named District Coach of the Year.

The Hawks finished in the top 10 of Class 2A in 24 team and individual categories including team pass completions, attempts, and yards, completion percentage, all-purpose yards, total touchdowns, total carries, yards gained from scrimmage, total tackles, total takeaways, total tackles for loss and yards per kick return. Individually, Ehrenfelt finished top 10 in the state in carries, rushing touchdowns, all-purpose yards, total touchdowns and rushing yards. Weber was top 10 in 2A in completions, pass yards, attempts, and completion percentage. Kaden Kos led 2A in tackles and was third in TFLs. Weber, Ehrenfelt, Kaden Kos and Hershberger added their names to the top 10 on 31 pages of the school record book.
