Water has been declared safe for consumption in Columbus Junction following a water main break and replacement.

At approximately 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Columbus Junction Public Works announced that the water samples it had sent for testing had both come back safe, meaning Toddtown residents can safely drink city water for the first time in just over a week.

Last week, a water main was broken due to floodwaters in Columbus Junction, forcing a temporary main to be installed for residents of Toddtown, which is north of the railroad tracks in Columbus Junction. The water from that temporary line was not safe for consumption. Saturday morning, crews replaced the broken line, at which point it had to be soaked in chlorinated water for 24 hours. Once that process was complete, water samples were sent to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources for testing.

The safe for consumption declaration is effective immediately.
