Early morning storms prompted severe weather warnings in southeast Iowa Tuesday. Just before 2:30a.m. The National Weather Service issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for areas of Johnson, Iowa, Keokuk, and Washington Counties until 3:30a.m. And a second warning was issued just before 3a.m. That continued until four, for portions of Washington, Keokuk, Jefferson, Henry and Van Buren Counties. The main threat with these storms were wind gusts above 60mph. A wind gust of 63 miles per hour was recorded at the Iowa City Municipal Airport. Ainsworth had sustained winds of 35 miles per hour. Washington, Ainsworth, Wayland, Kalona and Wellman all saw rainfall rates near an inch and a half per hour as the line of storms moved through. Four members of the KCII Severe Weather Action Team responded with coverage. Had the power gone out, coverage would have continued with our emergency backup generators. The one to count on for up-to-the-minute severe weather coverage is KCII.
