After last weekend’s storms, fishing conditions are fair across the board at Lake Darling State Park, according to the latest report from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
For black crappies, they are currently living seven to eight feet below the surface, occasionally moving to brushpiles five to six feet deep to stay cool.
Bluegills are cooling off in those same brushpiles but are living in slightly deeper waters, rock piles around eight to ten feet deep.
Channel catfish are generally living in the cooler deep waters just beyond the bank, coming to shallow waters in the morning to feed. The DNR recommends chicken liver for catfish baits.
Water temperatures are holding around 86 degrees. Algae blooms have decreased water clarity to about 18 inches.
