
The stage is set for both the Washington Demons and Highland Huskies after their quarterfinal matchups were announced yesterday for the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union state softball tournaments.
Washington will face Williamsburg in the Class 3A quarterfinals Tuesday morning. The Raiders are the defending champions in Class 3A and have a record of 33-7 this season, rising to the number-two ranking in the state.
The Demons earned their first trip to state since 2013 by defeating fifth-ranked Davenport Assumption 6-4 in the Region 5 finals Tuesday night. It’s the fourth all-time bid to state for number-10 Washington, who has gone 29-9.
Highland will face number-one-ranked Wayne in the Class 1A quarterfinals Tuesday afternoon. The Falcons are 25-2 and have won 11 straight games, including defeating the defending state-champion Sigourney Savages 2-1 in a regional semifinal.
The Huskies are also on a roll entering the state tournament, winners of eight in a row to improve to 17-9, including a 6-3 victory over Iowa Valley in the Region 4 championship game that punched their ticket to Fort Dodge for the first time in 11 years.
