The Lone Tree Lions summoned a late offensive outburst to secure an 8-5 win against Montezuma last night in the first round of the Class 1A Substate 5 playoffs. Lone Tree matched Montezuma’s run in the first inning with one of their own in the third, but they fell behind after the Braves scored in the sixth.

Down to their last three outs, the Lions would have an emphatic answer, scoring seven times in the top of the seventh to go in front. Montezuma got three runs back in the bottom half but could not come all the way back.

The win raises Lone Tree’s record to 9-13. The Lions advance to the Class 1A District 9 semifinals against the Sigourney Savages set for this evening.
