In the latest chapter of the Washington and Mid-Prairie baseball rivalry, it was the Golden Hawks that scored a 7-0 victory Wednesday at Dick Sojka Memorial Field. Pitching and defense controlled action early with Mid-Prairie starter Gentry Bontrager and Demon hurler Blayze Richardson matching zeroes through the first three frames. The Golden Hawk bats warmed up from then on, scoring three in the fourth, one each in the fifth and sixth and twice more in the seventh to secure the win.
The Hawks out hit the Demons 8-3 on the night, and drew four walks to the Demons one. Bontrager was dynamic in all aspects for Mid-Prairie, throwing a complete game, three-hit shut out at the Demons from the hill with seven strikeouts. At the plate, he had two hits, drove in a pair and scored a run. Following the game, he joined the KCII post game show to talk about his night.
Bontrager said, “My slider was working pretty good. I got some swings and misses, and they were watching it because I was placing it well. I had the two-seam on tonight. I was hitting my spots and overall things felt pretty good. (At the plate) we attack the first fastball, the first good pitch we see. Seeing all of our teammates swing it and catch barrels, it feels pretty good. I like how we’re sticking with things all the way through right now. We are starting late, or ending early, we’re fighting through no matter what.”
It was also a two hit night for Mid-Prairie’s Blake Swart and Cash Brown. Both also scored twice. Brown had an RBI. Jason Heitman drove in two on a hit. Richardson took the loss for Washington, working five and two thirds with five hits, three earned runs, three walks and three Ks. Nate Edmonds got the final four outs in relief. Edmonds, Mitchell Zieglowsky and Cole Vetter each had a hit for Washington. The Golden Hawk win is their fourth-in-a-row in the series and moves them to 16-12 on the year, while the Demons fall to 4-18.
