A Fourth of July bell ringing will take place at the Salem Church of God Friday morning, continuing its annual tradition that has been held for 65 years.
The church, which is located on Yucca Avenue northeast of Haskins, has rung the bell every year to celebrate America’s history. The tradition calls back on a quote from President John Adams in a letter to his wife Abigail, saying the anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence should be “Solemnized with Pomp and Parade with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations.”
The ringing will begin at 11:45 a.m. on Friday. Community members are invited to help ring the bell or listen to its toll. The celebration will last for 15 minutes.
