Looking for revenge against rival Iowa City Regina on Senior Night Tuesday in Wellman, the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk softball team came up short by a 4-2 score. It was Regina on the board first with a three run second as seven came to the plate, and the Regals would add another in the third to go on top 4-0. The Golden Hawks cut the lead in half with two runs in the fifth, with Claire Trimpe and Sophie Miller scoring on a Kadence Grout fielder’s choice, Trimpe single and Regals error. Down 4-2, Mid-Prairie would threaten in the sixth, stranding one, and have the tying runs in scoring position with two outs in the seventh, but were unable to convert. On the postgame show, Golden Hawk head coach Danielle Williams talked about her takeaways in the loss.
Williams said, “We had aggressive, quality at-bats right away in the first inning. We left some girls on base, but we were invested in each plate appearance, wanting to put the ball in play hard. (Grout) pitched well, and defensively, including her, we had hot shots hit back to us and it didn’t phase them. They were into the game. They played their roles and that makes a big impact when we have tight defense like that.”
The Hawks out hit the Regals 7-4. Trimpe and Grout each had two hits and scored a run for Mid-Prairie. Miller, Jersey Jergens and Macie Ihrig had one hit each. Grout did the work in the circle, going all seven with four hits, two earned runs, a walk and six strikeouts. Kylie Mattoon had a hit, run and two RBI to lead Regina. Reese Litton recorded the win in the circle, going five frames and Lily Nibaur got the six out save. The Golden Hawks honored senior Kyla Karnes with a ceremony during pregame. Mid-Prairie falls to 6-17 with the loss, Regina is now 8-14.
