As a reminder to Washington residents, the use or explosion of consumer fireworks within city limits is prohibited except during the following approved times: July 3rd – 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., July 4th – 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., and December 31st – 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. on January 1st.
Outside of these times, fireworks are not permitted and may result in a citation. To report illegal fireworks use, you can call the non-emergency number at 319-653-2107. Be ready to provide a description of the offender, the exact address and location, and your contact information, as you may be asked to testify in court. Officers will respond to complaints and use their discretion in issuing warnings or citations.
While the use of fireworks is permitted within city limits, Washington Fire Chief Brendan DeLong shared advice for people wanting to participate, “Just urge caution, you know it’s not just the fire danger, you know they are loud and it will disrupt your neighbor and it will disrupt their pets, and it will disrupt people with PTSD also. I just urge that anyone setting them off heeds that warning, and takes that into respect.”
Celebrate safely this Fourth of July, and keep in mind the disturbance and sometimes anxiety that fireworks can cause your neighbors and their pets.
