The Highland Huskies edged out conference rival Pekin 4-3 on the softball diamond last night. Highland took the initial lead with a run in the second inning and responded to Pekin tying the game in the fourth by scoring once in the fifth.

The Panthers would get two runs in the top of the seventh to again even the game, but the Huskies walked it off in the bottom half. Kamryn Fink led the Highland lineup with three hits and scored a run, while fellow freshman Maiya Singbeil stroked a double as part of a two-hit game.

Eighth-grader Jillian Stransky allowed seven hits and just one walk in a complete-game pitching effort while also striking out six batters as the Huskies improve to 6-5 in the North division of the Southeast Iowa Super Conference and 10-9 overall.

Highland baseball would be on the wrong end of a close contest with Pekin, as a single run in the third inning would be the difference in a 1-0 victory for the Panthers.

The Huskies got a dominant effort from senior Colten Sypherd on the mound, yielding only four hits and striking out seven while pitching a complete game, but they mustered only three hits at the plate.

The loss drops Highland to 10-8, including a 7-4 record in the Super Conference North. Both Husky teams are back in action this evening at Wapello.
