wash-high

The Washington Demons split a pair of games they played Saturday while hosting the annual Eddie Jones Softball Invitational. Washington lost their first game to Highland 4-3, allowing the Huskies to do all their scoring in the second inning and build a lead that the Demons would come up just short of catching.

But Washington would bounce back with a 13-0 victory over West Burlington-Notre Dame, scoring seven runs in the third inning to end the game early. The Demons, ranked ninth in the state in Class 3A, now have a record of 22-7.

Highland would also fall in their second game Saturday, losing 14-0 to Davenport Assumption. A 1-0 deficit after one inning would expand after allowing four runs in each of the next two frames.

The Huskies were coming off a tough 6-5 loss at Louisa-Muscatine the night before. Highland scored four times in the third to take the initial lead, but the Falcons would tie the game up and force extra innings.

While the Huskies got a run in the top of the ninth to go back in front, Louisa-Muscatine matched in in the bottom half and would score in the 10th to walk off as winners. Highland now sits at 9-9 ahead of their next game tonight against Pekin, while Washington plays this evening in a doubleheader at Fort Madison.
