The Sigourney Savages found a way to survive an extra-innings showdown with softball rival Iowa Valley, winning 3-2 in a game that began this past Monday night. Sigourney scored twice to go in front in the fourth inning, but Iowa Valley would tie the game in the sixth and force extra innings.
The game would go until the ninth inning, when inclement weather postponed the finish until Friday night. The Savages would get the lone run of extras by scoring in the top of the 10th, and they would hold on in the bottom half to improve to 14-1 in the South Iowa Cedar League and 14-6 overall.
Winfield-Mount Union/Columbus baseball would not have the same good fortune, suffering an 11-0 loss to Burlington Notre Dame on Friday night. The defeat drops the Wolves to 4-13 ahead of their next game Monday against Hillcrest Academy.
