Pavement buckled in rural Riverside Thursday afternoon following a week of extreme heat and humidity. The issue happened near the intersection of 160th Street and Vine Avenue, about 4.5 miles south of Highway 22.

The road was closed as crews worked to temporarily fix the road, although a more permanent solution will need to be applied later.

Washington County Engineer Jacob Thorius said that the moisture and hot weather of the past week were to blame for the buckling, “The heat causes stuff to expand, so it pushes on other panels. The only relief at times is, if there’s a weak spot, it pops itself and buckles or causes a blowup.”

Thorius went on to say that drivers who see a pavement buckle should report it to the engineer’s office during business hours and the safety center during off hours so crews can be deployed to repair the road.
