heat-2

As a heat wave moves into the area this weekend, people are reminded to take extra steps to keep kids and pets safe. The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for the entire area from Saturday afternoon through Monday evening. Heat index values could reach 105 through Tuesday. Take steps to be safe in the heat: drink plenty of water, stay in air conditioned rooms if possible, and limit outdoor activities.

Never leave a child or pet unattended in a vehicle, as even with the windows down the temperatures inside can climb quickly. According to the National Weather Service, when it is 90-degrees outside the temperature inside a vehicle can reach 116 degrees in just 15 minutes. The National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration states 39 children died from heatstroke in vehicles last year. That was an increase of 35% from the previous year.

Remember to check the backseat of your vehicle when leaving it.

In addition, with hotter temperatures pet owners should remember the surface underfoot for their animals. When taking dogs for walks, asphalt and cement can cause harm if temperatures are high. According to the American Kennel Club, when it is 85-degrees out and stays elevated throughout the day, taking your dog even for a short outing can cause harm to paw pads.

It’s recommended that dogs be walked in shaded areas or on grass or dirt when possible. Or go for walks during the morning or evening, avoiding the hottest parts of midday.
