The Washington Demon softball team is still unbeaten in conference play after they knocked off Burlington 12-3 last night. Washington took control right away by scoring three runs in the first inning on the road, and they would respond to an early Burlington tally by getting four more runs in the second.
Even after the Grayhounds cut the lead to 7-3 after two innings, the Demons would strike again twice more in the third and put up three more runs in the fifth to end the game early.
Catcher Alyvia Anderson led the Washington lineup with two hits, including a double, and three runs batted in. Fellow senior Ella Greiner and sophomore Colbie Greiner each had a pair of hits, one RBI and three runs scored, while junior Leighton Salazar picked up two runs driven in and scored twice on two hits.
In addition to two RBI on one hit, senior Bella Salazar was the winning pitcher for the Demons, throwing all five innings and allowing just two earned runs on five hits and two walks.
As his team improves to 10-0 in the Southeast Conference, head coach Ben Obermann told KCII Sports after the game that his squad showed the best of their abilities in securing a season sweep of the defending league champions.
“I told them after the game I was really proud of how we came out and played,” Obermann said. “With our approaches at the plate, we adjusted right away [and] scored a bunch early, and that really allowed Bella to attack the strike zone. Our defense played great behind. [I am] really proud of how we played in all three phases.”
Washington baseball would not have the same good fortune, falling at Burlington 14-8, a loss that drops them to 2-7 in the Southeast and 4-10 in total.
Meanwhile, Demon softball, now ranked 11th in the state in Class 3A, is now 15-5 after their win at Burlington. Washington plays again this evening, hosting a doubleheader with state-ranked Class 4A Carlisle.
