The Washington Demon softball team will look to continue their undefeated run in conference play when they travel to take on defending league champion Burlington tonight on KCII.

Washington is 8-0 in the Southeast Conference and 16-5 overall. The ninth-ranked team in the state in Class 3A has won eight of their last nine games, with junior Leighton Salazar leading the way from the lead-off spot in the lineup.

Salazar has a team-high .532 batting average and also leads the Demons with 41 total hits, 30 runs scored and 28 stolen bases, all of which are top two in Class 3A.

Bella Salazar has also been a force at the plate, hitting .403 with 14 runs batted in, while fellow seniors Ella Greiner and Alyvia Anderson are also batting over .300 and each have at least 15 RBI.

Meanwhile, the pitching trio of Bella Salazar, sophomore Colbie Greiner and senior Halle Cuddeback have kept conference opponents in check, yielding just a 2.98 earned-run average in league play. Washington head coach Ben Obermann tells KCII Sports that his whole team will need to be at their best against Burlington.

“Burlington’s a good team,” Obermann says. “They typically don’t beat themselves defensively, they’re well-coached, Burlington’s not an easy place to play, and they’ve been the team to beat in the conference the last couple of years.”

The two-time defending Southeast Conference champion Grayhounds have a 6-9 record and are currently 4-4 in the Southeast. Two-time all-state pitcher Kylee Hill has once again been a star for Burlington, posting a 1.55 ERA and racking up 51 strikeouts in almost 32 innings.

But Washington was able to overcome Hill and beat Burlington in both games of a doubleheader earlier this season. The Demons look to sweep the season series from the Grayhounds for the first time ever this evening, and you can catch all the action on 106.1 FM and streaming on KCIIradio.com and the KCII1 app, starting with the Countdown to First Pitch at 6:30.
