The Columbus Wildcats fell just short in a softball showdown with conference rival Wapello last night, losing 1-0. After a scoreless first six innings, Wapello pushed across the game’s only run in the top of the seventh and shut Columbus out in the bottom half.

Despite the loss, junior pitcher Kennedy Woepking was brilliant for the Wildcats, allowing no earned runs on three hits and four walks in a complete-game effort and collecting four strikeouts.

Sophomore Ellie Sanders cracked a double and had a pair of hits for Columbus, who now has a record of 5-3 in the North division of the Southeast Iowa Super Conference and is 7-7 overall. The Wildcats next play tomorrow against WACO.
