Only two of 121 Class 1A teams stand undefeated in the state of Iowa entering Monday night and only one will remain Tuesday morning as the Sigourney Savages (12-0, 8-0) host the defending state champions, the Lynnville-Sully Hawks (12-0, 9-0), in a clash of titans on KCII’s Area Game of the Week that will determine control of the South Iowa Cedar Conference.
The game is a rematch of last year’s state quarterfinal, which the Hawks won 2-0 as now-senior Lannon Montgomery knocked in both of the game’s runs.
The game promises a contrast of styles as the overwhelming offense of Sigourney, which leads the class in batting average, home runs, run differential, on base percentage and slugging percentage with top-five marks in RBIs and runs s cored, meets the smothering pitching and defense of Lynnville-Sully, which leads the class in strikeouts, opponent batting average, hits allowed, hit batters, and WHIP with top-five marks in walks allowed, runs allowed, earned runs allowed, errors committed, fielding percentage and ER A.
Coming into the game as the No. 2 team in the state as of the week 4 Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association poll, Sigourney head coach Lee Crawford says his team isn’t shying away from the rankings, “We are embracing it a little bit, believe it or not, we’ve basically told them let the coaches worry about that stuff, and if they just come out and play ball the way they know how, we’ll be fine.”
Lynnville-Sully was ranked No. 6 in the week four poll.
Slugging sophomore Chase Clarahan has shined for Sigourney, boasting a class-leading four home runs, a .452 AVG, a .614 OBP and a 0.968 SLG. He’s done similarly well on the mound, tossing 14 innings of shutout baseball this season.
Hawk ace pitcher Carson Maston has been nothing short of sensational in his own right, coming in second in the state and first in the class with 58 strikeouts on the season in 29.1 innings of work on his way to a .24 ERA and a .54 WHIP, the latter of which is top five in class 1A.
