The Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union baseball team slugged their way past the Lone Tree Lions on the road Friday night in Lone Tree, scoring 10 unanswered runs in their final nine outs to pull away in a 10-1 win in a game heard live on the KCII3 Stream as part of the Area Game of the Week.

Pitchers dominated the first four innings, with the only run scored in the third on a passed ball to put the Lions on top 1-0. After a scoreless fourth, the Wolves got hot on the bats, launching a hit in the fifth that eventually scored Gavin Prior and the go-ahead run with the player that had the lone hit in the frame, Kohlby Newsom. Three more Columbus/WMU hits were unleashed in the sixth, all while growing their lead to 5-1. The Wolves made the most out of their last three outs, doubling their advantage to the final score of 10-1 on four base hits, all coming on doubles from Newsom, Tyson Kaalberg, Lane Genkinger and Kason Dopler. Even though Lone Tree senior Jack Patterson would reach the basepaths on a single, relief pitcher Carter Finnell would shut the door, striking out Brody Magruder to end the game.

Unofficially, Columbus/WMU scored 10 runs on nine hits and committed no errors. Lone Tree scored one unearned run on three hits and committed four errors. Washington County Hospital and Clinics Player of the Game Newsom led the way in the win, going 3/5 with a home run shy of the cycle and three RBI. Trevor Phillips took the win on the hill, going five innings, allowing the one unearned run on one hit, eight walks and nine punchouts. Phillips joined KCII Sports live on the Area Game of the Week postgame show to talk about the win.

“Tonight I just took my time and took deep breaths and I was dialed in,” Phillips said. “I didn’t want them to score, and I knew we were in this ballgame.”

Lone Tree was led by three singles from Emmett Burke, Owen Eden and Patterson. Patterson owned their lone run. Burke took the loss in five-and-two-thirds innings of work, allowing five runs on five hits, three earned, six walks and four Ks.

The Wolves improve to 3-7 and will next face Mediapolis on the road Monday, while the Lions drop to 3-8 ahead of a trip to Danville to face the Bears on the same night. The Area Game of the Week will return Monday as well with a top six matchup between two unbeaten Class 1A conference foes with the No. 2 Sigourney Savages hosting the No. 6 Lynnville-Sully Hawks in a state quarterfinal rematch from last season. Pregame is slated for 5 p.m. on the KCII3 Stream.
