Both Sigourney Savage squads scored conference wins on the diamond Friday night. Sigourney baseball managed to hang on and keep their perfect season on track with an 8-6 victory over Montezuma. The Savages took the early 2-0 lead but saw Montezuma score three runs in the third inning and two in the fourth.

Sigourney would trail until they scored twice in the sixth to tie the game at 5 and scored three times in the seventh to take the lead for good. The win means the Savages, ranked second in the state in Class 1A, are now 12-0.

Sigourney softball also had a close call with Montezuma, but two runs in the opening frame and three in the last would be enough to get a 5-3 win. Senior Jospehine Moore led the way for the Savages.

In addition to a complete-game pitching victory where she allowed no earned runs and racked up seven strikeouts, Moore had a team-high three hits at the plate, including a double.

Freshman Devyn Smallwood came up with a pair of knocks and three runs batted in, while senior Dani Aller scored twice on two hits. Eighth-grader Kinsley Clubb added a double and a run scored as the 14th-ranked Savages improve to 9-3 and remain unbeaten in the South Iowa Cedar League.

Both Sigourney teams return to the diamond Monday evening against Lynnville-Sully. You can catch Savage baseball battle the Eagles in a rematch of a 2024 state tournament clash with the KCII Area Game of the Week. Coverage begins Monday at 5 p.m. streaming on KCIIradio.com and the KCII3 app.
