The Highland Huskies rolled up their eighth straight victory on the baseball diamond by defeating Wapello 13-3 Friday night. Highland scored five runs in the second inning and another five in the sixth to end the game early.
Senior Logan McFarland led the way for the Huskies, collecting team highs of three stolen bases, three runs scored and three runs batted in on three hits from the lead-off spot in the lineup while also pitching all six innings and racking up six strikeouts while also allowing just five hits and one walk.
Colten Sypherd had a team-high four hits for Highland and scored three times, while fellow senior William Dunbar crushed a double and freshman Caleb Wheeler smacked a triple. Both hitters joined sophomore Hunter Seibel in having one RBI on one hit and scoring two runs each.
Sophomore Landon Roling nearly matched McFarland with three hits, including a double, and three stolen bases, joining Sypherd and sophomore Garrett Beeson in driving in one run each for the Huskies.
Highland was coming off a thrilling 8-7 win over another conference rival in Pekin the night before. Trailing 4-3 entering the seventh, the Huskies scored four times in the top half of the inning to seemingly take control, but the Panthers got three runs in the bottom half to force extras.
Fortunately, Highland scored the lone run of the eighth, and McFarland pitched a perfect inning to close out the road victory. McFarland was also outstanding at the plate again, cranking a double as part of three hits, two RBI and two runs scored.
The senior also managed to come up with five steals, part of 12 total swiped bags on the night for the Huskies, who are now 5-0 in the North division of the Southeast Iowa Super Conference and 8-2 overall.
Highland also finished off the week with a pair of conference softball wins. They first edged out Pekin 9-7 on Thursday, responding to five runs scored in the first inning by the home team with two of their own in the third and the tying run in the fourth. The Huskies went in front by scoring twice again in the fifth and never looked back.
Maiya Singbeil led the Highland lineup with three hits, including a triple, and two runs scored. Fellow freshman Kayce Schnoebelen also had three hits and scored a run for the Huskies, while sophomore Katelyn Thomann and eighth-grader Kinzie Ruess each came up with two hits and scored one run.
Highland would knock off Wapello in a pitcher’s duel Friday by a final score of 3-2, not allowing the Arrows to crack the scoreboard until the fifth inning. Pitcher Jillian Stransky was outstanding in the circle, as the eighth-grader allowed just one earned run on eight hits and one walk while also collecting four strikeouts.
Singbeil and fellow freshman Kamryn Fink each hit a double and scored a run for the Huskies, who improve to 3-3 in the Super Conference North and 4-4 overall. Both Highland teams next play Monday, with baseball battling Burlington Notre Dame and softball squaring off against Holy Trinity Catholic.
