The Washington Demon softball team will look to stay undefeated in conference play when they host Fort Madison tonight in a game you can hear on KCII. In addition to a 5-0 start in the Southeast Conference, a sweep of a doubleheader at Fairfield last time out has Washington at 10-4 overall.

The Demons, ranked ninth in the state in Class 3A, are again getting all-state-level production from lead-off hitter Leighton Salazar, as the junior has a .510 batting average, 26 hits, 21 runs scored and 20 stolen bases.

Sophomore Colbie Greiner and seniors Bella Salazar, Ella Greiner and Alyvia Anderson are also bringing the power to the Washington lineup, combining to hit over .350 with 12 doubles, three home runs and 33 runs batted in.

Meanwhile, Colbie Greiner has been the Demons’ top pitcher, allowing just a 2.75 earned-run average and piling up 57 strikeouts in over 40 innings of work. Head coach Ben Oberamnn tells KCII Sports that playing at the Iowa City West Classic this past weekend has only made his team better.

“That’s why we go to that tournament,” Obermann says. “We know we’re going to see good teams [and] we’re going to see good athletes that are going to expose some things that we didn’t know about ourselves that we needed to work on. But we also found out that we can play with anybody.”

Washington is facing a Fort Madison team that features a powerhouse hitter in senior Brylie Lorance, who is batting .481 with three doubles, three homers and 10 RBI, but has just a 5-5 overall record and has gone 3-2 in conference play.

The Demons swept the season series with the Bloodhounds last year and have won five of the last six meetings. You can catch Washington softball against Fort Madison this evening on 106.1 FM and streaming on KCIIradio.com and the KCII1 app, starting with the Countdown to First Pitch at 6:30.
