On the heels of questions from local residents, both the Henry and Louisa County Sheriffs’ Departments highlighted information from the Iowa Department of Transportation on laws concerning ATV and UTV riding on public roads.

For non-farm uses, ATV and UTV riders are required to be at least 18 years old, hold valid drivers’ licenses, and have their vehicles registered and insured. Vehicles must have head lamps, tail lamps, signal lamps, a horn, a mirror, and a slow vehicle sign.

Those rules do not apply for farm uses within two miles of the drivers’ farmland between sunrise and sunset.

In all cases, the maximum speed limit for ATVs and UTVs is 35 miles per hour if not posted lower.
