The City of Kalona continued its overhaul of its sewer rates earlier this month, solidifying its fee rates for non-water customers who use the city’s sewer system.

Currently, the city’s code has a flexible sewer rate based on usage for non-water customers. Under the changes, sewer customers with private water systems would pay a flat rate of $60. Commercial customers who are on a property with a private water system would pay the flat rate of $60 plus a usage rate that would be determined either by an estimate agreed to by city staff and the customer or by metering the water system at the customer’s expense. Negotiated rates would need to be approved by the city council.

The ordinance passed first reading and is expected to return to the council for second reading at its June 16 meeting.
