fireworks-4

Fireworks are now permitted to be used in City limits according to state law.

The Washington City Council voted on the ordinance change that would put the law into effect at their recent meeting. City Administrator Joe Gaa gave more insight into the current ordinance and what the new ordinance entails, “So again, this is something where we are having to follow state law. They changed it to where cities cannot outlaw the discharging of fireworks on July 3rd or 4th, or December 31st going into the new year. You can still control other days. Our current ordinance allows no fireworks anytime, so this (new ordinance) will keep us in compliance with the state rules.”

If no ordinance was put into effect, then according to the state law, fireworks would be allowed to be used from June 1st through July 8 and December 10th through January 3rd of each year. The ordinance limits the days that they can be used. The City of Kalona also passed a similar ordinance amendment.

The new law goes into effect on July 1st.
