The Highland Huskies edged out conference baseball rival Louisa-Muscatine last night 3-2. After trailing most of the night, Highland scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take the lead.
Freshman Caleb Wheeler hit a double and had one run scored and one run batted in for the Huskies, while sophomore Hunter Seibel also had one RBI on one base hit and sophomore Landon Roling and junior Bryce Hazelett each scored once to go with a single.
But it would be Hazelett’s effort as the starting pitcher that led the way for Highland, throwing a complete game and giving up just one earned run on four hits and four walks while also collecting six strikeouts.
The Huskies earn their sixth straight win after an 0-2 start to the season and are now 3-0 in the North division of the Southeast Iowa Super Conference.
Highland softball would not have the same luck, falling to Louisa-Muscatine 4-1. The Huskies would come up with just one hit as a team and did not score until the final frame, suffering a loss that drops them to 1-3 in the Super Conference North and 3-4 overall. Both Highland teams return to the diamond tomorrow night at Pekin.
