The Highland Huskies rolled to victory on the softball diamond last night, defeating Mediapolis 11-2. Highland broke up a tie game with seven runs in the third inning and stayed in front the rest of the way.

Senior Lilly Barre hit a home run and finished with three runs batted in and two runs scored for the Huskies, while freshman Kamryn Fink came up with two hits and two RBI.

Ava Sexton had two hits for Highland and joined fellow freshman Kayce Schnoebelen and eighth-grader Kinzie Ruess in each scoring twice, while freshman Maiya Singbeil drove in a pair of runs to help the Huskies raise their record to 3-3.

Highland baseball would also be a winner in a pair of games Saturday in Brooklyn. After trailing for most of Game One against host BGM, the Huskies roared to life with three runs in the fifth inning, two to tie in the seventh and four more in extra innings to go on to a 9-5 victory.

Senior Logan McFarland and sophomore Landon Roling had one hit and two runs scored each for Highland, while senior Ryker Miller scored once and picked up two runs batted in on a base hit. McFarland pitched the last four innings for the Huskies and allowed no runs on one hit.

Highland held serve in a pitcher’s duel with Gladbrook-Reinback in Game Two, matching the Rebels’ run in the second, and the Huskies would break through once more in the sixth to eek out a 2-1 win.

McFarland had two hits and scored a run in the lead-off spot, but his best work for Highland came on the mound, allowing only two hits over the first five innings.

Eighth-grader Noah Hartzler pitched the final two frames to help the Huskies win a fifth straight game since an 0-2 start to the season. Both Highland teams are back in action this evening against Louisa-Muscatine.
