The Highland Huskies finished up the week by winning their first two conference baseball games of the season, including a 4-2 victory over Winfield-Mount Union/Columbus on Friday.
After the Wolves scored a run in the first inning and stayed in front over the next two frames, Highland put up three runs in the fourth to take a lead they would never surrender.
Sophomore Landon Roling had two runs batted in on one hit for the Huskies, while junior Bryce Hazelett had a hit, a run scored and an RBI. Senior Colten Sypherd got the start and the pitching victory for Highland, allowing only five hits and two walks while racking up eight strikeouts over the first six innings.
Roling pitched a perfect seventh inning and had two strikeouts to get the save as the Huskies improve to 3-2 overall. Senior Kohlby Newsom hit a double for WMU/Columbus and joined junior Kason Dopler in having one hit and one run scored each.
Senior Riley Kaalberg and junior Trevor Phillips drove in one run each, while Phillips allowed only two hits and one walk while piling up 12 strikeouts in six innings pitched as the Wolves drop to 1-5, including a 1-3 record in the North division of the Southeast Iowa Super Conference.
Highland was coming off a 2-0 victory over Lone Tree on Thursday night in Riverside. The Huskies only needed runs in the first two innings to knock off the Lions, as Bryce Hazelett allowed no hits while pitching the first five innings and Landon Roling picked up a six-out save in relief.
Roling also led the Highland lineup with two hits and one RBI, while Sypherd and fellow senior Logan McFarland came up with a hit and a run each.
Senior pitcher Jack Patterson was excellent for Lone Tree, giving up no earned runs on three hits and two walks and striking out 10 over six innings, but it was not enough to top the Huskies, who will next play Tuesday against Louisa-Muscatine.
