Washington Demon baseball started its week by dropping both games Monday night in a conference doubleheader with Burlington. Washington took the initial lead at home in Game One with two runs in the first inning, but a big fourth frame where Burlington did all its scoring would be enough for the Grayhounds to beat the Demons 8-3.
Freshman Mitchel Zieglowsky, sophomore Boden Brown and seniors Luke Schiebel and Cole Vetter had one hit each for Washington in Game One, while senior Nate Edmonds, junior Kael Williams and sophomore Blayze Richardson scored one run each.
The Demons would again have a lead going into the middle innings of Game Two after two runs in the second and one in the third, but another big inning by Burlington with seven runs in the fifth proved to be the difference in a 9-4 Grayhound victory.
Senior Conner Leyden led the Washington lineup with two hits and scored twice, while sophomore Ethan Peebler picked up two runs batted in to go with a base hit and one run scored. Brown added a single and a run as the Demons start Southeast Conference play 0-2 and fall to 1-4 overall.
Washington will next play tomorrow evening against long-time rival Mount Pleasant. You can hear Demon baseball on KCII tomorrow starting with pregame at 7 p.m. on 106.1 FM and streaming on KCIIradio.com and the KCII1 app.
