The fourth win of the season for the No. 15 Sigourney Savage softball team didn’t come without stress last night at Schafer Field in Sigourney, as the Savages held on to a late lead to defeat the Iowa Valley Tigers by a 2-1 final score.

Action was scoreless until the bottom of the third when senior Josephine Moore knocked in leadoff hitter Kinsley Clubb. The game stayed 1-0 until the Savages knocked in an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth with back-to-back doubles by Ella Bruns and Kiley Cavin to score Bruns and make it 2-0. Things became stressful when Iowa Valley began their last chance in the top half of the seventh with three straight hits by Emma Von Lienen and pinch hitters Jasmine Slaymaker and Maggie Kriegel to push across their first run before an out would be recorded. With the go-ahead runs on second and third, Moore successfully walked the tightrope, striking out two of the remaining four batters to secure the victory.

Unofficially, Sigourney scored two runs on seven hits and committed two errors. Iowa Valley scored one run on four hits and no errors. Moore captured the win in the circle, going the distance and giving up the lone earned run with four walks and nine punchouts. Bruns went 2/2 with a single and a double, while Cavin and Moore had RBI. Bruns joined KCII Sports live on the Area Game of the Week postgame show to give her thoughts on her key hit in the sixth and the win.

“We needed to get some hits, get up, because we knew they were getting on the ball,” Bruns said. “When I got that hit, it felt really good for the team getting on base.”

Olyvia Grant went 1/2 with a single to lead the Tigers. Lydia Kriegel picked up the loss, going six innings and giving up Sigourney’s two earned runs with two walks and three Ks.

With the win, the Savages remain unbeaten at 4-0 and will travel to Davis County tonight, while Iowa Valley drops to 1-3 ahead of a matchup with Belle Plaine this evening. The Area Game of the Week will feature a tripleheader across the KCII family of networks tonight, with rivals Highland and Hillcrest Academy meeting on the baseball diamond on the KCII3 Stream.
