
As week two of the high school softball season begins tonight, the No. 15 Sigourney Savage softball team will look to keep up an undefeated start to the season by hosting the Iowa Valley Tigers on the KCII3 Stream.
All of Sigourney’s three wins this season have come in South Iowa Cedar League conference play. The Savages put on a clinic in their most recent contest Friday in a 22-1 win at Belle Plaine. Josephine Moore took the win in the circle, allowing one unearned run on three hits, while Devyn Smallwood knocked in eight runs. This season, Sigourney has 29 runs on 22 hits with 29 brought in, a .314 average, .430 OBP and .457 slug. In the circle, Moore has pitched all 18 innings to date, allowing just four runs on five hits, nine walks to 33 punchouts, a mere .071 opponent average, .780 ERA and WHIP. The Savages’ opponent average and hits allowed are both top five in the state.
Iowa Valley is 1-2 on the season after a loss at home to BGM Friday 9-4. In the loss to the Bears, Lydia Kriegel led the way with her two hits going yard and three knocked in. This year, the Tigers have scored 15 runs on 16 hits with 14 RBI, hold a .250 average, .385 OBP and .406 slug. As a staff, Iowa Valley has pitched 17 innings, giving up 30 runs on 31 hits, 26 walks to 15 strikeouts, an opponent average of .310, an ERA of 10.71 and WHIP of 2.47. Kriegel has the most time in the circle, having tossed 16 innings while holding a .312 opponent average, 11.38 ERA and 2.56 WHIP.
In the Varsity Bound era, Sigourney is 26-4 all time against Iowa Valley dating back to 2009 and have won the last 26, including the six most recent matchups in shutout fashion.
