Both Lone Tree Lion teams suffered close losses on the diamond Friday night at Wapello. Lone Tree softball got the early lead with a run in the first inning before Wapello tied the game in the second and took the lead in the third.
The Lions picked up a pair of runs in the fifth and looked on their way to a win, but the Arrows scored twice in the seventh and final frame to walk off as 4-3 winners.
Rylee Shield had three hits and scored two runs from the lead-off spot to lead the Lone Tree lineup. Fellow senior Kayleigh Rundlett smacked a triple and had two runs batted in as the Lions fall to 1-3.
Lone Tree baseball faced a similar fate. After scoring a run in the second for the initial lead, they saw Wapello strike twice in the third. The Lions looked like they would steal a road victory by scoring three runs in the top of the seventh, but the Indians matched that with three runs of their own in the bottom half to also get a walk-off, 5-4 win.
Despite not having a hit, senior Maddox Jondle had a team-high two RBI for Lone Tree. Sophomores Cole Walmsley and Jacoby Moffitt added one hit and one run scored each as the Lions drop to 2-2, including a 1-1 record in the North division of the Southeast Iowa Super Conference.
Lone Tree softball will play again this evening against Holy Trinity Catholic and tomorrow against WACO, while the Lions return to the baseball diamond for their next game tomorrow night against Washington.
