The Keota Eagles got the job done in both softball and baseball contests Friday evening at Montezuma. Keota softball broke up an early tie game with three runs in the third inning and two in the fifth, but it was a five-run outburst in the sixth that put them in control of an 11-2 victory.
Eighth-grader Jessalyn Aller led the way for the Eagles at the plate with three hits, including two doubles, and five runs batted in. Cameron Haifley had a double as part of two hits and three runs scored, while Elysa Lyle scored twice and fellow freshman Karley Greiner had two RBI.
Junior Kennedy Jackson added two hits and scored a run for Keota, while senior Lainey Swanson blasted a double and crossed home plate twice. Aller was the winning pitcher, allowing only one earned run on four hits and no walks while also racking up five strikeouts in six innings to help the Eagles end their 0-2 start to the season.
Keota baseball would be in control from the start against Montezuma, scoring two runs in the first and three in the second, but it was another five-run inning that allowed the Eagles to end the game after six frames as 11-1 victors.
Senior Ashton Galindo had three of Keota’s 14 total hits, including a triple, and scored twice, while senior Billie Kindred also had three base hits and scored a run.
Freshman Blake Baker came up with a double as part of two total knocks and two runs batted in, while junior Jackson Vittetoe drove in three and sophomore Brennan McGuire scored twice on two hits.
Junior Jacob Libe also scored a pair, while McGuire got the win on the mound by pitching all six innings and allowing only one earned run on three hits. A first conference win of the season means the Eagles now have an overall record of 2-2.
