The Sigourney Savages rolled to an impressive 22-1 victory over conference rival Belle Plaine on the softball diamond Friday night. A whopping 11 runs came across home plate for Sigourney in the first inning, and they would continue to light up the scoreboard with nine runs in the third before ending the game early.
Freshman Devyn Smallwood had a huge game at the plate for the Savages, crushing her first career home run and finishing with a whopping eight runs batted in on three hits. Senior Josephine Moore joined her in scoring three runs and had two hits and two RBI, while sophomore Kia Montgomery drove in three runs on two hits.
Kinsley Clubb added three hits, three runs scored and another two knocked in from the lead-off spot, and fellow eighth-grader Kiley Cavin stroked a double as part of two knocks and two RBI.
While the bats were spectacular for Sigourney, Moore also had a solid night as the starting pitcher. The senior gave up no earned runs on 3 hits and racked up nine strikeouts while throwing all four innings.
The 15th-ranked team in the state in Class 1A starts the new season by improving to 3-0. The Savages will next play Monday against another South Iowa Cedar League rival in Iowa Valley.
