Highland School’s bond measure and associated projects will be delayed as an appeal has been filed with the Iowa Supreme Court. The item stems from November election results that showed 61-percent of voters approving a $15-million bond measure, however it was discovered on Election Day that some voters were given the wrong ballots.

The petitioners’ notice of appeal that was filed in Muscatine County Court lists Ronald Greiner and Marcus Fedler as the petitioners. This appeal follows a District Court ruling that was made on April 29th in Henry County. The District Court upheld a Contest Court’s 2-1 decision that the election results stood.

The District Court ruling was made April 29th and the petitioners had a 30-day window to file an appeal. It was filed on May 27th.

The projects associated with the bond funds include renovating the high school cafeteria, a new multipurpose athletic facility and locker rooms at the high school, collaboration and classroom additions at the elementary school, and improved safe and secure entry at the elementary school. This matter will continue on as the Highland School District has a new superintendent taking the helm July 1st with Spencer Lueders stepping into the role as current Superintendent Ken Crawford retires.
