Both the softball and baseball teams would earn wins for the Sigourney Savages in their first conference games of the season last night against English Valleys.
Sigourney softball bounced back from an early 3-0 deficit in their season opener by scoring three runs in the third inning, but while the game stayed tied for most of the night, the Savages would have a walk-off in the seventh to earn the 5-3 victory.
Meanwhile, Sigourney baseball wasted little time taking the lead, scoring six runs in the first frame and putting up an eight-spot in the third to end the game early with a 16-0 win. The Savages, ranked fourth in the state in Class 1A, are already out to a 4-0 start to the season.
While the 15th-ranked softball squad prepares to face BGM this evening, both teams will be on the diamond Friday to face another South Iowa Cedar League rival in Belle Plaine.
Winfield-Mount Union/Columbus baseball would not have the same good fortune in their season opener, falling to West Burlington 9-7.
A three-run deficit in the first inning meant the Wolves trailed all night, and while they got four runs in the last frame, they could not come all the way back. WMU/Columbus looks to avoid an 0-2 start to the season when they travel to face Burlington tonight.
