The Washington Demons will try to get one step closer to the girls’ soccer state tournament when they travel to Davenport tonight to meet Assumption in the Class 1A Region 3 semifinals.
Washington’s 1-0 victory over West Liberty in last week’s quarterfinals helped the Demons improve to 9-7 and guaranteed them a winning record for the third time in the last four years.
Junior Angeline Anderson’s howitzer score to knock off the Comets adds to her team high of nine goals for Washington, while senior Maya Murphy has scored seven times and junior Luna Cuevas leads the team with seven assists.
Junior Jocci Carter has netted six goals for the Demons as well, while junior goalkeeper Aleigha Medley and senior defensive back Ana Mata lead a back line coming off its seventh shutout of the season.
Washington will be going up against an Assumption squad that is 10-4-1 and is ranked third in the state. The Knights beat the Demons two years ago when the two teams last met in the postseason. Kickoff this evening in Davenport is set for 7 o’clock.
