Area athletes competed in the Iowa State Track and Field Championships at Drake Stadium in Des Moines over the weekend, with 57 local athletes bringing medals home. One area runner carried home  gold.

Winfield-Mt. Union’s Kohlby Newsom was the area’s lone state champion, winning the Class 1A Boys’ 800 meter race with a time of 1:53.83.

Area teams that placed were as follows: Washington boys, 17th in 3A; Mid-Prairie boys, 9th in 2A; Mid-Prairie girls 5th in 2A; Columbus boys 5th in 1A; and Winfield-Mt. Union boys 17th in 1A.
