Every day it’s estimated that about 9,500 people in the United States are diagnosed with skin cancer, according to the American Academy of Dermatology Association. May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month.
The American Cancer Society states skin cancer is the most common of all cancer types with more than 5 million diagnosed each year in the U.S., more than all other cancers combined.
People should take steps to prevent skin cancer. Wear a broad spectrum sunscreen that is at least 30 SPF, and remember to reapply it. Also, wear a hat and sunglasses, and seek shade especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Remember skin should be protected year round from the sun’s UV rays and all skin types can develop skin cancer.
The American Academy of Dermatology Association also encourages people to stop using tanning beds.
