The Sigourney Savages will wear a target on their backs this coming softball season as the defending Class 1A state champions. Sigourney went 26-7 behind a strong senior class in 2024, including the state’s top pitcher and the reigning Gatorade Player of the Year for Iowa softball in graduate Carly Goodwin.

As their new season begins, the Savages will be doing a lot of starting over. Five starters have to be replaced, but one big returning piece is senior Josephine Moore.

The two-time all-state catcher was a force at the plate once again last summer with a .396 batting average, nine doubles, 11 home runs and 39 runs batted in. Moore will help lead this year’s pitching staff, having compiled a 4.10 earned-run average and 166 strikeouts in nearly 160 career innings.

Freshman infielder Ella Bruns is also back for Sigourney after hitting .265 with 16 RBI in her rookie season, while Dani Aller will be another senior leader for the Savages in the outfield. But, despite a lot of new faces otherwise, head coach Shelly Streigle tells KCII Sports that the high standards at Sigourney won’t fade.

“Expectations don’t change,” Streigle says. “We set the goal high, and if we make it, that’s the intention. If we don’t, we reset and go on to the next one. The state championship’s the ultimate goal, and you work down from there.”

The Savages will throw the first pitch of a new softball season Tuesday against Iowa Valley.
