The No. 4 in Class 1A Sigourney Savage baseball team had a field day Wednesday night on their home diamond as they slugged their way past the Pella Christian Eagles in a 19-0 mercy rule victory.

After starting pitcher Chase Clarahan struck out two to begin the game, Sigourney got on the board in the bottom of the first inning after an RBI single by senior Caden Clarahan. Still with no outs, sophomore Lincoln Power drove in two later in the inning to push the lead to 4-0. Seemingly unable to get timely outs, Pella Christian starter Logan Gallaher was pulled after just a third of an inning worked with one punchout. By the time the damage was done, the Savages had plated nine after three outs had been recorded.

It was three up, three down for the Eagles in the second, turning things back to the home Savages. However, the PC defense stiffened, allowing just one run to score off of a passed ball. Even though the Eagles saw their first baserunner reach on a walk in the top half of the third, no damage could be done. The bottom half saw fireworks from the Sigourney battery. A double by Power, a grand slam by Caden Clarahan and Isaac Bruns’ solo shot to right field tallied six RBI. Sigourney would slam the door on any potential comeback by PC in the top half of the fourth by turning a 4-3 double play from second baseman Brady Clark to first baseman Hunter Sellers to shut the lights out early.

As a team, Sigourney went 8/16 at the plate with their 19 runs and 15 RBI. Caden Clarahan and Power would lead the way for Sigourney hitting a combined 5/5 night with four runs and nine RBI. On the mound, Chase Clarahan picked up the win, pitching a complete four inning no-hitter with five Ks. Clarahan was named Washington County Hospital and Clinics Player of the Game for his pitching performance. He joined KCII Sports postgame to talk about the win, his no-hitter and his goals for the season.

“Pretty exciting,” Clarahan said. “I really wanted the perfect game until I walked those two kids, but I’m happy. A couple goals are to throw a complete game, which I just did, maybe a perfect game, good no-hitters and win.”

Garrett Wielard and Gallaher were the only hitters to reach base for Pella Christian on the night. Gallaher took the loss on the mound, surrendering the opening eight runs on two hits, four walks and one strikeout.

With the win, Sigourney moves to 1-0 on the season and will return to action tonight in a doubleheader against Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont. Pella Christian drops to 0-1 ahead of a matchup with Carlisle Friday. The KCII Area Game of the Week returns next Tuesday night on the KCII3 Stream with softball action in Wayland between the Highland Huskies and home WACO Warriors.
