The high school girls’ soccer postseason begins tonight, and both Washington and Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union will try to get wins in Class 1A Region 3 quarterfinal matches.

The Washington Demons will host West Liberty in their quarterfinal at Washington Wellness Park. The Demons have a record of 8-7 and been led by a diverse group of goal scorers.

Angeline Anderson leads the team with eight goals, while fellow senior Maya Murphy has seven and junior Jocci Carter has six, but three other players have found the back of the net at least three times this season.

Senior Ana Mata is one part of that trio but also has been Washington’s top defensive back, helping goalkeepers Aleigha Medley and Kate Flannery to allow less than two goals per game. Medley leads the Demons with 47 saves and has stopped over 70 percent of the shots she’s faced.

Washington will be taking on a West Liberty team that is 4-6-5. The Comets have been able to force so many draws thanks to freshman keeper Emmee Wiele, who has made 180 saves and stopped over 89% of shots against her.

Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union will have to go on the road to take on Mediapolis in a Region 3 quarterfinal. While they have an overall record of 5-6, few teams have been on a roll like the Wildcats have been of late, winning five of their last six games.

Senior Frannie Sosa leads the team with eight goals, while sophomore Iris Garza has scored seven times and joins Sosa in dishing out four assists. Junior goalie Sarai Martinez has also allowed only 12 goals.

Columbus/WMU is facing a Mediapolis squad that went 10-5-1 in the regular season, but one of those victories was by a slim 2-1 final when they last faced the Wildcats on April 3rd. All girls’ soccer playoff matches kick off this evening at 7 o’clock.
