The City of Kalona passed utility rate increases, implementing them for the 2025-26 fiscal year.
After no public comments were submitted between the first and second reading, the council waived the second reading to pass the ordinance on third reading, which it did unanimously at their meeting this week.
The rate increases will pay for a lagoon expansion, a transmission line and filter rehabilitation, and a water plant expansion over the next two years, as well as a water/sewer main replacement in 2027 or 2028.
In July 2025, the flat water rate will increase from the current $14.50 to $18.50 and the flat sewer rate will increase from $13.50 to $19.50. The per-1000 gallon rate will increase to $4 for both. The rates will continue to increase through the 2027-2028 fiscal year.
