Local high school girls’ golfers will try to earn a spot at the state tournament when they compete in regional finals across the state today.

That includes the Highland Huskies, who are seeking a return trip to state after finishing third in Class 1A in their first-ever trip last year. Highland has been just as good this spring as they prepare for the Class 1A Region 4 finals at Prairie Knolls Country Club in New Sharon.

The Huskies have won all but one of their 12 events this season, including back-to-back Southeast Iowa Super Conference championships and a victory at their sub-regional tournament at Sigourney on Friday by over 30 strokes.

Junior Emersyn Schultz shot an 11-over-par 81 for Highland last week and leads the team with an average 18-hole score of 85, but senior Adeline Krotz tied for meet medalist honors with the same score at Sigourney Golf Club to beat her season average by 15 strokes.

Junior Adisyn Prottsman and freshman Joslyn Prottsman joined them in the top 10 with rounds of 93 or better and also have average scores of 100 or lower in 18-hole events.

Hillcrest Academy’s Claire Withrow will also compete at Prairie Knolls after finishing fifth at the Region 4C tournament with a season-low 90. The junior has an average score of 103 per 18 holes for the Ravens this season.

Meanwhile, the Columbus Wildcats will try to move on as a team from the 1A Region 5 finals at Little Bear Country Club in Wyoming. Columbus was second at the Region 5A meet at Wapello on Friday and has a solid season going, with three team victories and no finish worse than third at a tournament.

Junior Kinlee Brown paced the Wildcats with a 94 at Wapello and is the team’s lowest-scoring player in 18-hole events. Senior Lily Coil and junior Hailey Wellington also cracked the top 10 on Friday and each have 18-hole averages of under 109.

Winfield-Mount Union’s Kellee Milks also looks to advance to state from Little Bear after her season-best round of 105 at Wapello advanced her to the Region 5 finals. The junior has a 111 average in 18-hole tournaments this spring for the Wolves.

The Washington Demons will be taking on the field at Stone Creek Golf Club in Williamsburg in Class 3A Region 4. Washington has been led in scoring by sophomore Lucy Sands, including a 106 average in 18-hole meets, while freshman Elizabeth Hora has an average score of just over 110 for the Demons. All girls’ golf regional finals tee off this morning at 10 o’clock.
